From a dream to reality

Late in 1955, there was a dream to bring an arts center to Brooklyn. It was a project that involved the city, the state, CUNY, and Brooklyn College to bring to life a center at the end of the IRT line in Flatbush. There was a modified U-shaped building that was to house four performance spaces that ranged from a small experimental theater to a large 2450-seat theater that is the centerpiece for many performances. The Performing Arts Center was to be open to all people in the community and you with your rent a car in NYC at prices that are affordable. It is close to the communities of Flatbush, Midwood, Flatlands, Carroll Gardens, Sheepshead Bay, and Coney Island where in the past you were find few cultural activities in the past. Today in the Whitman Theater has cinema capabilities. This caught the eye of the movie studios which sometimes use the space to give sneak previews of movies to generate word-of-mouth excitement for a film.
