Car Rental New York City and Canarsie

Canarsie is a neighborhood in the eastern part of Brooklyn. The name comes from the Algonquin word for “fenced land” or “fort”. Canarsie has an interesting place in history because the Indians who sold the island of Manhattan were from this area. This area was a fishing village until the end of the 19th century, when water pollution killed the oysters and fish. This was an area that was largely settled by Italian and Jewish settlers until the mid-20th century. The neighborhood lies within the former town of Flatlands, now part of Brooklyn. This was one of the original five Dutch towns on Long Island.

Canarsie is home to many parks. The largest is officially name Canarsie Beach Park, but locals refer to it as Seaview Park. The beach overlooks Jamaica Bay. Renovations have taken place recently at the Canarsie Pier as well as the beach. For bird lovers, the pier is a great place to observe them. This is a favorite spot by the Brooklyn Bird Club because of the large amount of bay duck species and other waterfowl that are native to the area.
