Activities at Gateway National Recreation Area

If you head to Floyd Bennett Field, which is located on Flatbush Avenue, just south of the Belt Parkway, you’ll see a piece of history. Originally, the Field was the first municipal airport. During World War II, the field functioned as an important Naval Air Station. The north end of the hangar row will be shortly be turned into a sports complex where ice hockey and other sports can be played throughout the year.

The Field also houses park administrative offices, the Armed Services Reserve Centre (Marine Corps), a training facility for the New York City Department of Sanitation and a training facility for the New York City Police Department.

With the addition of the new sportsplex, the park officials anticipate attracting more tourists and more traffic. There might be some improvements on Jacob Riis Park’s vehicular access. (Riis Landing may be better known as Station Rockway.) A proposed project aims to create an alternative approach to help reduce outside traffic through the adjacent residential areas yet improve access to Jacob Riis Park for visitors coming from north and east of the Rockaway Peninsula.

Future Developments for Gateway National Recreation Area

The City of New York is now working on capping and landscaping the former landfill sites at Pennsylvania and Fountain Avenues. The National Park Service will operate the site once it is completed. The site will serve as a wildlife habitat and passive recreational uses. In order to simplify site access, site security and limit internal circulation and parking, the proposed transportation enhancement project for this area hopes to address these issues. You can look forward to navigating with ease in your NYC Discount Car Rentals rental in the near future.
