New York Car Rentals and the Grand Army Plaza Brooklyn
Grand Army Plaza is the Arc de Triomphe of New York City parks. This triumphant entrance is a memorial to the defenders of the Union who fought in the Civil War to keep the United States together as a strong nation. There is a memorial here as well as a series of bronze sculptures around the plaza that commemorate many historical figures, including John F. Kennedy and others. The Plaza is also the site of the second-largest open air Green Market in the city and easy to get to with your New York car rental. You can enjoy the fresh taste of the fruits, vegetables, baked goods, and dairy products as you explore the grounds.
Grand Army Plaza is part of Prospect Park in New York City. When the park opened in 1867, the Plaza was comprised of a simple fountain with banks of earth as a barrier with plants. Within two years, the man who designed Grant's Tomb in Manhattan was commissioned to add some glory and greatness to the plaza with a bigger monument that reminded people of the large plazas in Europe. When you walk onto the Grand Army Plaza after leaving your New York car rental you will get a sense of Old Europe. By the end of the Civil War, there was wide support for this type of monument to pay tribute to the war heroes. It was unveiled by President Grover Cleveland in 1892. In 1896 the first sculptures were commissioned to depict Civil War battle scenes.
On Saturdays the Green Markets at Grand Army Plaza and Bartel-Pritchard Circle bring some of the freshest produce, dairy, and meat right into the heart of Brooklyn. On top of that, all of the produce is grown in the region by farmers who specialize in organic, unprocessed, and free-range products. You can also find some rare finds here, such as blueberry wine. On Saturdays, the market is open 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. year-round at Grand Army Plaza and the Bartel-Pritchard Circle is open Wednesdays from April through November 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. This is a great place to stop with your New York car rental.
While you are visiting Grand Army Plaza, you can visit other attractions within Prospect Park before going back to your New York car rental. The Carousel is a great place to take kids - or go for a spin on your own. It's only $1.50 to ride it, and it will make you feel like a kid again! You will discover 51 carved horses, a lion, a giraffe, a deer, and two dragon-pulled chariots. It was carved in 1912 by one of the best-known carousel designers of the time and it was restored in 1990.
