Sheepshead Bay is the bay that separates the mainland of Brooklyn from the eastern portion of Coney Island. It is a short trip to many of the tourist destination is New York and New Jersey with a Brooklyn car rental. The bay was originally the eastern entrance to the Coney Island Creek, but that was filled in the 1930s to build the Belt Parkway. The bay is named for the sheepshead, an edible fish once found in its waters. It was at one time a noted sporting center.

The community on the mainland side of the bay is also known as Sheepshead Bay, while the community on the opposite side is Manhattan Beach. Manhattan Beach was once the site of a popular beach resort, but is today home to residential neighborhoods and popular Coney Island beaches.

Brighton Beach

Near Sheepshead Bay is Brighton Beach, a short drive with a Brooklyn car rental. Located on Coney Island, this community was originally developed as a beach resort in 1878, but redeveloped as a residential community in the 1920s. This is a largely Russian community, with many Russian restaurants and stores. The community is very close to the beach, with access to the Brighton Beach Avenue subway station. There is parking for your Brooklyn car rental, but on weekends this is a popular destination, so come here early.

A Short Trip to the Big City
