If you do not own a car, there are deals available at Bronx car rental companies where you can rent a car, minivan or 15 passenger van to take your family, friends or group gathering to the Zoo. Driving to the Zoo is very simple as the Zoo is centrally located in the Bronx and easy to get to with your Bronx car rental. The Zoo is located near all highways which service the Bronx.

The Zoo is open almost every day - it is closed New Years Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas and Martin Luther King Day.

An overview of the Zoo

The Bronx Zoo occupies land which was previously owned by Fordham University. In 1895, the City sold the land for $1,000 and chartered the Zoo and an accompanying Garden.

The buildings and permanent exhibits were designed by William Temple Hornaday. The park opened November 8 1899 with 843 animals and 22 exhibits. Today, the Bronx Zoo is home to over 4,000 animals, many of which are endangered or threatened.

One of the more famous exhibits the Zoo has hosted featured a Snow Leopard cub named Leo in 2006. The cub was found stuck in the mud following a landslide which killed its mother. Interestingly, the cub was rescued in Pakistan and since there are no rescue or breeding programs in Pakistan the cub was brought to the United States and handed over to the Bronx Zoo. Authorities hope to return the cub to the Zoo once adequate facilities can be built in Pakistan. In January 2010, the zoo was selected to house four abandoned baby bear cubs. The Zoo suspects that their mother was killed in a mudslide. The four cubs are healthy and happy in their new home. The cubs have proven to be a popular exhibit.

The Bronx Zoo features a Children's Zoo, a Butterfly Exhibit, and Congo Gorilla Forest. Each of these special areas requires a $3.00 admission charge. The general admission to the Zoo is $15.00 for adults and $11.00 for children. Seniors pay $13.00. There are several other specialty areas such as the 4D Dora Adventure, Camel rides, and the always popular Carousel.

Another popular area of the Zoo is the Madagascar Exhibit, which opened in June 2008. The exhibit contains animals from Madagascar including Lemurs, Hissing Cockroaches, and Nile Crocodiles.

The Bronx Zoo has several world-class exhibits including Congo Gorilla Forest, the Wild Asia Monorail, Tiger Mountain, and as mentioned, the newest exhibit, Madagascar. There are daily happenings at the Zoo such as animal feedings and other demonstrations throughout the Park.

Take your office on a field trip to the Zoo

Many groups take their staff on outings to the Zoo as corporate retreats, often renting on or more vehicles from local Bronx car rental companies to help with transportation. Training sessions incorporate how the various animals work together in team building exercises. It is possible to rent cars in the Bronx on an hourly, daily and weekly basis to visit the Bronx Zoo as well as other area attractions. Hourly car rentals and rentals of 15 passenger vans are also available in the Bronx. It is often less expensive to rent a car locally in the Bronx than from a company located in Manhattan, because local car rental companies offer flexible rates and services.

Enjoy an afternoon at the park

After your visit to the Zoo, why not hop in your Bronx rental car and visit one of the other Parks and open spaces which the Bronx has to offer. In these Parks you can park your Bronx car rental and enjoy a picnic, walk along the Hudson River, or even take your Bronx car rental on a scenic drive along the Henry Hudson Parkway. Be sure to stop at one of the many areas along the way and take in the scenic views of the Hudson River and surrounding mountains. If you are traveling in a group, you can consider renting a minivan or 15 passenger van from a Bronx car rental company to take in all that the Bronx Zoo, and the Bronx in general, has to offer.
